(Final?) Blog Post

2 min read

With class nearing its end, I wanna say it's been a great class. Shame we didn't get to spend more time in class because of the outbreak. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the classroom. That and the confusion of doing a lot of work from home on some projects where I didn't know what I was doing was stressful, but here we are. My only question at the end is how we'll be graded and If I did a good enough job. I remember we were supposed to meet with our professor in person to discuss what grades we deserve for our midterm, but then the outbreak happened and some of us never got the chance. So with that,  I'm just gonna say that during the first few months I feel like my work as at best A- or B+ material. I always tried my best to stay on track and make sure I knew exactly what I needed to do to accomplish my goals. And for the final, well I don't know if my input matters in this regard given the circumstances, but I would say personally my work due to the outbreak has degraded to a B-. Despite my best efforts, I cannot help but feel my work is not what it could be given the stay at home order and I had to figure a lot of things out for myself. But in all that, I do not regret taking this class at all, outbreak or not. It was fun, the professor was kind, respectful, and most importantly: Patient. I truly admire this quality in people, more so in teachers. He always made sure to get to everyone's question and didn't blow a gasket if someone repeated a question already asked, he simply just answered it again so for that he has my undying respect. I wish there were more professors like him that realize new students are rookies to the subject and don't have the same level of understanding as he does.

Great class, greater professor, I just wish the outbreak happened later/never just so I could've gotten the true EDU106 experience.

This may be my last blog post so with that, thank you all for coming along with me on this journey and I hope our paths cross once more.

This is Chris, signing off.

Remember our goal it to "operationalize" the "theory" of connected learning using "matirix analysis" to evaluate an online community

We have discussed shapes a lot this semester. We started by tracing the shape of Kobe Bryant's award winning farwell to basketball. You then traced a shape of a story. Finally you shared the shape of your own story as we built an About Me website, created an unselfie, and did a photo challenge.

Meanwhile we learned how to recognize the shapes of qualitative and quantitative research articles you will encounter in college. We explored how values get baked into numbers or codes.

Now you begin to shape your own research.

We have been learning about a theory of learning called "connected learning." Theory gets operationalized in research, so the way we are doing that is by breaking connected learning into categories and placing this in a table. There is a column for you describe how you define the principle, a column for you to describe your learning community, and then a column for any additional notes. This is a simplified version of something we call matrix analysis.

This process is our method of research. You have to first complete an example of your matrix by looking at an exemplar texts. These are the case study examples from the DML Research hub we looked at. This provides you a chance to practice completing the matrix.

Giving you practice means you get trained as a researcher and this helps increase the rigor of results.

After you did the model you were then to choose a community to analyze. Remember you are not going to prove if it is or is not "connected learning."

You collect evidence, put it in the write box on your matrix, look for patterns and draw conclusions. It may or may not be a connected learning space. It may not matter. Go where the data takes you.

This graphic organizer is due next Monday. While this was a group project I will allow people to work alone giving the craziness going on.

Don't Worry, We Got This

I know many of you may have a bit of anxiety as we move to a fully online classroom. I wwant you to know I will be here for you. I will complete EVERY task that assign to you and create a culture where we support each other.

Let's Connect

I am here for you. We will meet at our normally scheduled Monday and Wednesday class times. I will send out a video link. I have already posted my virtual office hours for drop in help.

Cool Activities

All those fun activities where we focus on production based learning. We will keep it up. I will make tutorial videos, we will have fun discussions about the readings, and continue to learn stuff.

Next Steps

Please continue to "Learn Something." Share your blogging reflections describing how you are "Learning how to Learn."

I will make tutorials today on how to record podcasts as learning reflections. When we return from spring break we will work on making timelines.

Well back to my ukulele lessons.

Hey @scsu here is the @zoom link for horu Wednesday design studio, let's take advantage of the COVID-19 and learn how remote is done. It is the future: https://zoom.us/j/410045963 I will set up different breakout rooms depending on need

Notes on Approaching our Next Module in #edu106 a Tech fluency class @scsu a study in digital #literacies

1 min read

We began class with a check-in. Every class begins with an entrance slip where students blog about their writing. I use this technique to take advantage of instructional minutesd but also allow students who have back to back classes across campus make it before we start new material.

We then went over expectations of our second module "Learn Something"

We first connected back to the larger picture in class. It is always better to connect objectives back to course goals and even better if you can connect to personal learning goals.

In this class students get exposure to web development, photography, audio, and video editing. They then specialize when they choose a "Do Something" project to better themselves or the world.

Next we reviewed the principles of connected learning. I went over the history and values included in the perspective.

II then reviewed with students how I scaffold their case study writing. Today I provided direct instruction on Connected Learning. Then this week we are looking at mentor text written by the connected leqrning alliance.

Also on Quick Thoughts

Hey here is a video describing our "Learn Something" project for this month: https://jgregorymcverry.com/videos/EDU106LearnSomething.mp4 (captions coming soon)
If any or want to join us, just pick something, learn about it, reflect, blog, rinse repeat

Here is today's for Day 3 @scsu:

Using photo editing software, splice pairs of pictures into single images. Play with scale in delightful ways. See artist Stephen McMennamy's great collection: http://combophotos.squarespace.com/ h/t

Thanks for sharing a story of learning. You got close. You can defrost shrimp in the water bath as suggested. You can use warm water...but if it is too hot you can cook the outside....Shrimp only take a few minutes to cook and the acid in yoru sauce will continue the cooking process.

I bet it was delish!

Here is the @scsu day one : Capture your doorway on to the world.
