Lowline Project: Transforming Urban Space and Learning

Project from the East Side of Manhattan, where the interaction is face to face and combines a number of educational techniques among social connectedness, shared purposed and social connection. This project is involved with local schools, service organizations and settlement houses.

They aim to claim unused space in one of the least green parts of New York, the area where the Williamsburg Bridge Trolley Terminal remains abandoned. They have made an effort of putting artwork down in the terminal in order to persuade the new Yorkers who spend much time down there. They have involved students in the project by allowing them to use the space to formulate new ways to learn art and math. They also bring the students in a history tour before the project and the students are engaged in imagining and discussing design and social considerations for the millions of subway riders who transit through\ the station.

After the students collect information they report back to their parents and peers and then create a 3D scale model of what they want to see in the actual park using low tech materials. After they have created their models the organizers create a showcase of their artwork and then other students take notes on what to do next. This goes on for every generation of students.
